Mentor ranked 68th among the Top 100 Best Places to Live in America in July 2006. The population was 50,278 at the 2000 census. Mentor has one of the largest school systems in Ohio with 10 elementary schools, 3 junior high and one high school. The city government is based on a city managed executive appointed by city council. Mentor is named after a Greek figure in keeping with the Connecticut Western Reserve settler’s tradition. It is the location of James A. Garfield’s home from 1876 that is now a National Historical Site. The city is also home to Headlands Beach State Park, the longest natural beach on Lake Erie.
